AP layoffs under way*

The Associated Press is expected to shed 70 or more jobs by the end of the year and Gawker reports that the layoffs have gotten under way today.

*Update, 11/19: Gawker has compiled list of those laid off at AP and is updating it as more names come in.

This site apparently has laid off its copyeditor(s): "under way" is two words, according to the aforementioned AP, at least.

NAA layoffs yet again. The one who heads that organization is useless and has been for years. Exactly what do newspapers pay dues to that outfit for? While you are busy cutting costs at your newspapers take a look at the ROI you are receiving from the NAA. Talk about a Ponzi scheme.

This is really unfortunate. Do we know who they let go?

Why is anyone surprised at this? The chairman of AP board is Dean Singleton, the Slasher/Owner of Media News Group.

It's all business, nothing personal.

At least one of his prior publishers once told me that singleton was good for the business. The logic was that if he didn't buy these properties they would disappear. Flawed logic. They are now disappearing with the death of a thousand cuts. The misery these clowns have caused is monumental. And yes, the economic circumstances have played a key role in the downturn, but, his cast of clowns are responsible for quite a large percentage of the downturn from inept decisions and poor management.

As callous as this sounds, I checked the Web site with the list of names and am a bit frustrated by it. That's not much of a list. When people were laid off from Belo, Singleton, Gannett and the Times in Socal, we got names. Names take the "business decisions" and "reorganizations" and puts a human face on it all. I can't understand why there aren't more names. We all heavily rely on AP. The impact is going to be felt far beyond the AP offices.
