Tarshes out at PE

I'm told Riverside Press-Enterprise Executive News Editor Barbara Tarshes lost her job today as the paper moves ahead with another round of cuts.

MediaNews gave a whopping six weeks. I'd take the extra four weeks any day. Apples and oranges though. Folks are still losing their jobs.

This is terrible. Barbara, you are a good editor. That paper is going to miss you a great deal.

compared to medianews they are generous, but, medianews said no more layoffs.

Not to maliciously add to the rumor mill, but I understand all but one person in Human Resources was let got as well.

Anyone able to shed some light on all of this?

2:16: It may be marketing you're thinking of.

11:03: She was OK, but too fond of delegating her duties. There are bigger losses here this week.

"She was OK, but too fond of delegating her duties."

Oy! Not a good thing in this environment.

You'll notice that the editor's husband (a PE photographer) is not among those laid off - funny how that works. Several of the editor's friends who work at the PE also appear to be safe. Did anyone expected fairness in the cutbacks?

My husband worked for her at another newspaper and always had great admiration for her. Hope she lands on her feet.

Barbara was a good editor, back before she became management. She remained a good person. Once in management she delegated everything, didn't learn the new system, could never answer a question directly (too busy playing CYA). So she became unimportant. Plus, one of the remaining managing editors, a pal of the editor, didn't like her. She was the only copydesk loss, which means the copydesk really wasn't hit at all.
There were too many good sports people and photographers given the pink slip. What's worse, those laid off Wednesday had a list of the layoff-ees, so word trickled out as to who was being laid off. so management had to act quick. Really bad.
