Another layoff in LANG

Tim Berger, new media editor for the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group, was laid off this morning. He has worked for the group for well over a decade. Editorial employees were told that this is the only layoff planned between now and the end of the fiscal year.

SGVN is part of the larger LANG cohort and consists of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the Pasadena Star-News and the Whittier Daily News.

Actually, Tim Berger had more than 20 years with the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group. Sorry to hear he's gone.

Did any of the other LANG papers in socal get hit too? Those guys over at the Bulletin are professionals at destroying the other papers they know nothing about. Wow!

Re anonymous No. 3 ... huh? Bulletin? Huh? With love, Anonymous No. 4.

anonymous #4: Don't play stupid. Those guys heading up the LANG papers come from the Bulletin and they know nothing about the SGVN except that they want to destroy it (by sheer stupidity) although it is the highest revenue producer of all LANG.

Wow! It's like, some kind of dark master plan! So, like, after they destroy it, then what happens? Do they collect the insurance? Double indemity?

Get over it! all of the papers are being run by people in DENVER!!!!

Tim arrived at the Trib from a Bay Area newspaper in 1992. I know. I was there. I also worked with him for many years.

He's a good guy and a great dad.

Tim is top-shelf all the way.

Denver runs the papers, but locally, the ones making the calls come from the Bulletin. No master plan, that is the problem. They dont know or better said, have no idea how to run a business. All they know is that they keep their incompetent friends in while the good workers either leave on their own or are "laid off" i.e. fired. Wake up dolts and realize that the chicken in running loose, without a head, ever since Ron Wood left.

People, people! We - actually, you - are all in the same boat. Can't you see? Divide and conquer (or is it cluster and destroy?)...Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you should be looking to leave this sinking ship. I did. I know you can too. You are talented and eager to succeed. Best wishes!

new media editor?
What was his job there? What did he do?

Berger is one brilliant and talented guy. They have no idea what they just lost. He was the "go to" guy for everything.

The Bulletin has nothing to do with ruining the papers. You're firing at the wrong target. aim farther east, past the affluent towns of the Inland Valley, into the rougher depressed neighborhoods of San Bernardino.

There you will find your destroyer ensconced safely and smugly in his office.

But if you want to keep blasting away at the nearly emptied and decimated Ontario paper go ahead. Nothing would please the dictator more.

Tim is a good guy. It would be nice if the editor of the newspaper knew in advance who was selected to be dismissed. Heaven forbid he would have a vote. According to reports heard Tim wasn't the only one in editorial to be let go.

Also, more layoffs in the ad arena with sales reps and ad assistants. HR and other departments continue to shrink too.

LANG management continues down a path of cost cutting and not focusing on the right things for revenue growth.

Continued back biting and poor communication are ripe within the organization.

Now of course they can blame it on the recession, however, the wheels came off long before the current economic winds.

Take a long look at what has transpired about a year ago until today. Bad consultants, bad hires, and bad plans.

Other than the, the future looks promising!

Also, seems the budget recently set may be experiencing some weakness. Another shocker.

sources say printing of all lang papers will be outsourced in the near future.

Berger was a waste of space, but sorry to hear he lost his job. They should have just /given him something to do./

Amen to the earlier comment about San Ber. He has even orchestrated his budget so the entire group shows as a whole saving the inept efforts in the east and dragging down the entire group to an even worse level.

Where do these leaders spawn from?

I am not surprised that Tim Berger was let go. When I was an intern at the SGVT I never saw him actually do anything - most of the work was done by the Assistant Photo Editor. He was pretty much a waste of space and revenue from what I observed.
