Investigative reporter wanted for press events

Mashable, a social media website, has a job opening for a "seasoned" investigative reporter to cover the Bay Area. The job comes with three key responsibilities, only one of which strikes me as having anything to do with investigation or reporting. See if you can guess which one:
*Sourcing original stories about the tech and social media world
*Taking regular meetings with companies in the area and going to press events
*Speaking at events and participating in press interviews
To get the job, candidates must have at least two years "at an established news organization doing investigative reporting."

'Don't land here'

The job market for newspaper journalists has apparently become so desperate that small papers are chasing off large pools of potential applicants for open positions. Take the small Beverly Hills Weekly, which has barred the door to anyone living outside of Southern California or with five or more years of experience:

Quotas, no ties

The new rules for reporters at the Los Angeles Daily Journal are somewhat less regressive than feared. Male reporters won't be required to wear neckties after all and there is no story quota. However, DJ reporters will have to write at least three blog posts a week and do "outreach" (meeting up with important lawyers on their beat) at least four times a month. They were also told to get to work no later than 9 a.m. Oh, and the paper has placed an ad on Media Bistro for a new editor.

*Question: Does Alan Mittelstaedt stay on?

Garyslist

Want to get into the newspaper business? Or maybe you just don't think the summers here are warm enough?

Bridget Lewison, formerly of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, is inviting anyone with the stomach for 100-degree-plus nights to apply for one of three open positions at the Mohave Valley Daily News in "glorious" Bullhead City, Arizona, right across the Colorado River from Laughlin, Nevada.

The paper is hiring a page designer/copy editor, an education reporter and a lifestyle magazine editor. (I'm not exactly sure what "lifestyle" the magazine plans to chronicle - six sassy habits of retired police sergeants? - but I'm sure Lewison can explain it.)

Other openings might come up in the near future, she adds. For further information, contact Managing Editor Wayne Agner at wagner@mohavedailynews.com,or call 928-763-2505 ext. 119.

I don't plan to make a habit of running job listings here, but I figured this one wouldn't hurt.
