That LAO post also mentions that Randy Hagihara is leaving. I solicited career advice from him in my early days of reporting. He told me in not so many words that I had little to no chance of landing at the Times because I basically wasn't ethnic enough. That conversation was a real bummer, and it colored how I viewed the Times forever after.

Word today is July advertising numbers were so bad there will be a Round 2 of layoffs by September. Hope it is just an echo.

Why does more layoffs always sound like a surprise? There is zero chance of advertising revenues making a comeback. I can make a solid case that they will only get worse. There are a number of reasons. The rates are way out of line for the audience. Circulation and readership have declined big time. There is no selection left in the newspaper, hence, no marketplace. Competitors are smarter and they work. Classified is dead and those left running that arena haven't a clue how to run the business. Local display has left the building. National and majors are going adios too. More layoffs will continue until the newspaper goes away.

The daily newspaper model cannot work, but a print publication can. But it will be tight margins no matter how you do it. The glory days are long gone.

OK, so you did have a good excuse for disappearing from this blog. Congrats on the new gig.

Hey Gary,
Any word on big layoffs in operations at LAT? Will that mean big changes in what they print?

Heard Whittier Daily News will be out of West Covina. Closing the building? Probably more bad news to come.
