Sun newsroom says 'no' to union

I'm told newsroom employees at the San Bernardino Sun have rejected an effort to form a union at the MediaNews Group-owned newspaper. The vote was 12 to 2 against.

When the union election was set, 17 people were eligible to cast ballots. I'm told two people have since left and one ballot was challenged - an action that won't change the outcome.

What about Sun staffers who are made to work in Ontario ... were they eligible to join the union? Not that it matters, given the vote.

You would think from the recent blogs that the union was a winner hands down. I guess employees figured it wouldn't change anything, which is the correct assumption. Working there still sucks, but, at least those left are still currently working. The union can't gum singleton to surrender.

14 votes? How f-ing pathetic has that place become. Well, all of the LANG papers under Lean.

Garçon, garçon! Kool-aid for 12 please!

yikes. now that the vote is over, are the inevitable layoffs arriving?

There was a union movement there 25 years ago or so. I think more than 100 voted.

I'm sure it came down to a choice between being treated like crap by management, or being treated like crap by management and having to pay union dues.

I sincerely doubt that anyone in LANG even considered addressing any of the issues or problems that might have caused anyone to even consider joining a union, and tried to convince them not to join. They don't have to.

I think that those 12 that voted no are running scared for their jobs. WIth those emails sent by the publisher demanding they say no, I guess the poor worker bees just had to stay under the radar lest they be next on the chopping block. It's a sad situation at these LANG papers.

last poster, please read the prior post. no reason to pay dues, union today with these papers is worthless.

Re: July 9 @ 7:09

Even though unions don't do anything and paying dues is a waste, those who voted NO did so, imo, as to avoid sending any signals to the boss that they disagree with upper management in anything. The NO vote implied to the boss that workers are happy with their situation, thus keeping them under the pink-slip radar. That's why I said the workers are running scared and making ANY type of waves that bring attention to them, imo, I believe they think will be detrimental to keeping their job longer than someone else there.
