Layoffs, departures at the Press-Enterprise

The Press-Enterprise in Riverside laid off 11 pressmen, a photo tech, and an editorial assistant this week, I'm told. No word on whether the Belo-owned newspaper plans to change its printing operations.

The paper also had some recent departures from the newsroom, but not due to layoffs. Cops reporter Paul LaRocco is headed to Newsday and prep sports reporter and columnist Matt Calkins took a job with the Vancouver (Wash.) Columbian to cover the Portland Trail Blazers.

Good for Mr. LaRocco!

Also good luck to Matt. The Columbian is a respected family publication that has another former PE talent, Mark Bowder running the city desk.

I gotta say, calling Mark Bowder a "talent" is a real stretcher. He always struck me as being as dense as a wood core door.

ouch...Must be thinking hollow core over the dense solid wood. That's the problem with journalist today, no research.

Smart and talented to still be working, unlike most.

Research, my ass. I fabricated wood core and hollow core -- not very well of course -- and absolutely know the difference. The only people working in journalism today are the ones who don't have the balls and/or the brains to get out.
