Dial tones for debtors

MediaNews Group, doing business under the name Affiliated Media, is set to enter bankruptcy court on March 4. Before it does, it has made a few requests of the judge in the case. First, the company doesn't want to have to sign checks "Debtor-in Possesion." Second, and more important to people working in the chain's newsrooms, it wants to keep the phones and the Internet working.

From the Denver Daily:
MediaNews asked Judge Kevin J. Carey in a 23-page brief that “the debtor (MediaNews) cannot continue its operations without the continued services of the utility provider. Any disruption of the utility services supplied by the utility provider, for even a brief period, would be extremely costly to the debtor and harmful to its business.”

I worked for a Media News paper as a reporter and was asked to leave my home shop to travel to a Media News paper a far greater distance from my home. I was given a desk without a working phone and my editor never lifted a finger to rectify the situation. So I landed a job at that place's chief competitor and I've been using the phone there quite successfully ever since.

These clowns, just when I believe they can't say anything dumber, never disappoint.

unbelievable. what a freaking joke the crap they worry about. gimme a break. such garbage.

What is mentioned here is part of a broad range of mundane and technical procedural filings. Bizarre that anyone would make anything of it.

Far more interesting are the sections about the massive bonuses Dean and his managers are pulling for leading the company into bankruptcy.

C'mon, Gary. Use this space for something worthwhile.

This begs the question, have they been paying the phone bills and Internet bills?? Why is this even in the brief unless it was in danger of being shut off.

If this is a pay Friday, I would go to whatever bank the checks are drawn on and cash my check and deposit the greenbacks instead of the check.

The information about the bonuses and salaries was posted here nearly a week ago: http://reporter-g.blogspot.com/2010/01/what-happens-after-medianewss.html

The reason why I chose to post about the phone and Internet lines is because it's a reminder that bankruptcy is a complex and unpredictable process, despite talk of "prepackaged" and streamlined procedures.

Also, I know for a fact that LANG newsrooms have had to deal with glitches in the publishing software, as well as occasional phone and Internet outages, so the prospect of unpaid bills or conflicts with communications providers is worth keeping an eye on.

gary, please stay up on this topic. thrilled at your coverage. MNG would prefer to bury it all and keep their employees in the dark. don't want anyone to be a victim but unfortunately don't have much faith in lean dean's rhetoric. remember when he said under no circumstances would MNG ever file for bankruptcy? don't feel the rumors he said, they are within agreement with their covenants and debts. lies, lies, lies. how can he be this deep in debt with the bank taking over and business as usual. puh-leeeeeze!!!

and oh...who remembers a couple years ago when he said he would rather answer to ONE banker than TEN journalists.

8:39 get a clue. ALL of this is important. ANYTHING pertaining to MNG. we want to be in the loop. so chill out dude. and he did post about the bonuses and salary. mentioned about jody making a million. but unless the rank and file who are still at MNG band together and speak up, nothing will happen. and most folks at LANG seem to have a very insecure view of themselves....."lucky to have a job" type of mentality so they put up with crumbs. so dean knows no one will band together and go after them or file some type of suit. the folks left at LANG are the one's who take it and stay silent. just look at how they forced them to go from torrance, long beach, woodland hills and san berdoo all the way to san gabe. and they desperately went.

Hey 8:39, do us a favor and start your own blog and wax poetic to your content. I happen to find this worthwhile and humurous. Since I am not an expert on bankruptcy procedure, I learned something.

As one poster said, how late are they with phone bills etc...they don't even begin to think about shutting off service unless you are three months behind or more.

You can always count on Dean's posse to miss the boat and lie.

Folks, what 8:39 says about this being standard BK proceedings is true. It doesn't mean they haven't paid their bills. In a BK NO ONE gets paid until the judge authorizes it. So, Media News is going to the judge with a list of critical vendors that must get paid in order for them to stay in business. Like the phones. That's all.

are they going to shut down any of the papers? i hear LANG is making money and they are rebuilding.

Harmful to the business, if that were the case all the singleton bafoons should have left the building years ago...but, paying the phone bill will make everything allright.

I must be in bizarro land.

I also understand the bankruptcy proceedings, this is, as others have said standard. Just anothe idiotic way of singletom communicating badly.

I can't believe this. I've heard there going to move the copy desk again, this time to Redlands? I don't even know where that is. Just because the company owns the building shoulnt be reason to combinate copy desk there, again, like at the sun.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry, soon there won't be a need for a copy desk.

You miss the point. You assume doing what is good for business and employees is the way the organization acts. Are you nuts. This is most likely the most ready, fire, aim organization on the planet. You will spend more money on gas, commuting time etc. and still will be axed.

2 a.m.?? move what copy desk? the universal one from san gabe to redlands? they own the san gabe building so why would they move? and they have people commuting from long beach and woodland hills. i doubt it's true. where are you getting your info? facts, please!! the publisher at the DN had a meeting and it sounds like they want to bring those folks back to woodland hills

If it makes sense count on them not doing it. This copy desk ckuster f--- started over three years ago, maybe longer. Dutch, are you listening? It was a bunch of crap when it was first proposed that they all go to San Gabe, then magically they head further east. Can you imagine living in the San Fernando Valley and driving to where they are now, much less Redlands?

I can't imagine them moving back, as stated earlier it would be the correct business decision.

Anonymous said...

Redlands? That makes no sense, Ive been there and it's too small to handle production for Lang. It's between San bernardino and riverside.

Anonymous said...

2 a.m. is just spreading rumors about redlands. there is no truth to it.

Anonymous said...

Two a m may be spreading rumors, but, the way lang is producing, to small may not be accurate. But, it does not make sense as it stands today. Even the surviving fred probably knows better.

Apu said...

Very soon, you will wish the copy desk were being moved to Redlands. The odds are at least 2-1 that Singleton will outsource all his copy desk work in both LANG and BANG to India.

With Skype cutting phone costs to the bone and computerized layout, it will be easy to edit and design pages in Bangalore or Mumbai and then print them in Southern California.

Copy desk jobs in this country are definitely endangered.

All you need to do is look at his newspapers, and for that matter, many others to see the errors etc.

Maybe if we are lucky singleton can buy some newspapers in India and move there.

Anonymous said...

so this is why they made everyone buy their own cell phones. Once again, the employees paying to work for the company.

Anonymous said...

A company in bankruptcy court and concerned about possible suspension of telephone service will need a policy regarding personal phone use for work purposes. For example, employees will be reimbursed for all cell phone charges, subject to the bankruptcy code and the court’s prioritization of payment to creditors.

Anonymous said...

this group of misfits and pretenders have a lot more to worry about than cell phone bills.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, no wonder many don't turn in expenses, i.e. subsidiesing the company, when you have to jump through fire rings, cross falling bridges and run towards a stampeed of psycho bison just to get your mileage and phone bill paid. and what about all those who continuously work extra hours, not minutes, hours, to finish their work without compensation? All you editors say not to work over the 8 hours but then you force people to stay until "the work" the excessive work, is finished. cry me a river and everyone just bail today.

I have read your newspapers lately. I thought most had left.
