A new kind of deadline

The folks at the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group are serious about their time cards. Here's a memo sent yesterday to editorial employees:
Time cards are due tomorrow at 5:00 pm. If I do not receive your time cards, you will receive written warning in your files and disciplinary action up to and including termination will begin.

Nursery school begins again. Worried about time cards for a newspaper group that is dying with revenue losses, circulation declines and massive layoffs is like being on the Titanic and worried about the crease in the waiters trousers.

As many have stated...what a bunch of loons.

How about letting adults do their job.

If you don't submit a time card, you don't get your paycheck on time. Seems like that scenario would just naturally work itself out.

Forget the secretaries...who is the moron that thinks time cards at newspapers are necessary? Earlier poster, right on the spot...no time card no check. I wonder how much internal discussion was had and how much time wasted in their weekly pow wows to come up with this crap.

Can the people get any dumber? Wait, I know the answer.

If it wasn't against some state law, I would be all for lazy people forfeiting their paycheck if they continually can't turn in their cards on time.

I am amazed that these kindergartners can function without needing someone else to wipe their noses every five minutes.

time cards aren't in on time probably because they're all scared to write in the extra time they work daily without breaks and lunch. I bet every single time card has had a discrepancy for years (on the negative for the workers, of course) that would get uncle Sam madder than a baby without its pacifier (i.e. the sec w/o time cards). Is there any lang employee out there who can honestly say they only work 8 hours/day?

yep, the publisher/editor. he may be there more than 8 hours but working in the key word.

how is the circ and ad revenue publisher? let us not forget the quality of your product.

I was stunned that they still use paper time cards. Ten years ago I worked at a movie theatre that had an electronic system to punch in and punch out. How much money do they spend on buying and mailing these time cards?

I used to be. I watched as managers and admins wasted dozens of hours chasing the children who didn't finish their job and still expected to get paid.

I bet you were one of the children ;)

Filling in the hours on those time cards was the best fiction I ever wrote. Mandatory work breaks? Mandatory meal breaks? Eight-hour shifts? Ha! Everyone knows they're all made-up numbers.

Is LANG that confident in the way they handle timecards that they can threaten employees with termination?

A company whose managers look the other way when employees falsify their cards to show less than actual hours worked?

Are they that confident they won't get called to answer to the State Labor Board?

LANG will regret the day they ever hired the imbecile who wrote that memo.
