Dean still lean

Dean Singleton's MediaNews Group has ordered a 5-percent pay cut for all guild employees working in the company's Bay Area News Group, which includes the Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times.

As expected, guild reps protested the decision. From Editor & Publisher:
"It is a mistake to cut pay right now when glimpses of recovery are starting to appear," said Carl Hall, local representative for the California Media Workers Guild, which oversees the East Bay guild unit. "They should be rewarding and encouraging us to work harder than ever. People are feeling devalued."

But Jim Janiga, senior vice president/human resources for the Media News Group California division, said the cuts are needed. "The newspaper industry as a whole is still having to deal with this transition," he stated. "We've still got to be reasonable and prudent."
In June, employees at the Singleton-owned San Jose Mercury News saw their wages cut by 7 percent. Singleton used furloughs and vacation freezes to trim newsroom costs at his Southern California newspaper.

Dean is sharp and that's why he is so powerful and controls so much. You can complain, you can whine, you can say whatever you want, but at the end of the day Dean is in control. His papers are highly leveraged, but they are still profitable. He will win.

yay! at least no cuts at LANG or SGVNG. Then again, we make so little that it would be tantamount to working for FREEEE!!!!

So what is it that he wins?

Lean dean will even pimp all of you out to make a profit.

Singletons newspapers dont have a clue how to compete in a non print world. Take a look at their e commerce solution. Circulation will continue to slide, ad revenues will continue to drop and not return, and, at some point he will still have a business that makes a buck but not much more. Maybe that is all he needs and cares about.

(re what he wins ...) I've been assuming MediaNews ownership has been pursuing an exit strategy. If so, it's one long, long, ongoing implementation.

I for one am very glad to see that the hostile name calling of the leaders within lang and especially in san gabe have ceased. It it good to see that the human spirit survuves and we can get back to calling them what they really are. Inept boobs.

Inept boobs that are turning a very good profit. If you think Dean is doing anything other than making a fortune, you are foolish.

well, unless you have very good inside info, consider you might be wrong. I am not saying he isn't turning a profit but it is getting smaller and smaller. California is in the toilet, advertising is sinking at a faster clip, circulation is on a steady decline and cost cuts can only take you so far.

There are a number of inept boobs that may be rich...turn a profit...have a big ego etc. A very good profit was north of 20 percent and for smaller papers north of 30. I doubt he is close.

I don't believe he is in need for a mission meal yet, but it aint pretty.

Half decent pay gets half decent effort.

Which produces less than half decent newspapers and rapidly crumbling circ and ad numbers. Wow, what a plan for greatness!
