Hamilton named LANG president

The Los Angeles Newspaper Group has promoted Fred Hamilton to become president of the nine-newspaper chain. Hamilton had served as president and publisher of LANG's Inland Division. He replaces Ed Moss, who resigned to become publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

In addition, Liz Gaier, who served for a time as publisher of the Daily Breeze, will take over as interim publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News.

The company memo follows:
Los Angeles Newspaper Group (LANG) today announced the promotion of Fred Hamilton to President. Hamilton, previously President and Publisher of the Inland Division of LANG, replaces Ed Moss, who resigned to become Publisher of the San Diego Union Tribune. Hamilton brings more than 25 years of experience in the newspaper industry to this position, having previously served as publisher of several newspapers in the Western United Sates prior to joining the Los Angeles Newspaper Group.

“Ed Moss did a terrific job for us as head of LANG, and we are sorry to see him go,” said Steve Rossi, President and CEO of California Newspapers Partnership, of which LANG is a part. “However, we are fortunate that Fred Hamilton is ideally suited and prepared for the top Position in LANG.”

In addition, Liz Gaier, MediaNews Group’s Senior Vice President of Business Development, was named interim Publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News. In addition to her corporate experience, Liz has considerable experience in newspaper operations, including a recent assignment as Publisher of the Torrance Daily Breeze.
*Update: The Union-Tribune gathers Moss.

guess the drum beats saying the little genius was heading south were true. the damage he did was astounding. nice to pat him on the back on the way out the door, but, good riddance. prediction, take a look at san diego trib...wave goodbye to it.

His mantra now in The Tribune is funny. Maxamize revenue opportunities my ass. I still challenge anyone to name just one revenue idea Ed Moss created during his time here.

Ed is a brilliant operator. He had his marching orders; you'd do the same if you ascended to a similar role. If you agree to take the job you have to do the unpleasant things that come with the territory. He probably added years to the life of this newspaper group. Face it.

Will you be moving with him Renee?

moss gets his marching orders from singleton. don't blame him. he's just doing his job. in fact, he was told he didn't have to take a furlough and he did. also, he has been fighting the pending paycuts that are coming to LANG.

He did the best he could under extraordinarily poor conditions, facing problems he did not create, under orders to take severe steps, which he took, and no one who has dealt with him directly (as opposed to anonymous sniping from people who have not worked with him directly)has a personal criticism or harsh comment to make. And, yes, things remain bad and getting worse.

For those who look favorably on Moss, would it be fair to say that the new trib folks hired a man willing to do the dirty work, even if reluctantly so?

I heard these new owners like work very leany budget wise.

Oops, meant to just write "lean"

"I heard these new owners like work very lean budget wise."

-What does this mean?

Moss payed millions to outside consultants for adimpact, cp-ads and ad mall. Lot's of hoopla but no ROI. Big hat. No cattle...

It's silly to worry about people like Moss or Lambert or anyone else who isn't named Singleton.

Blaming anyone other than Dean is like blaming a marionette for what the puppeteer does.

Anonymous said...

For the one who said that no one who has dealt directly with him has anything bad to say about him... this is for you. Ed was told to make cuts from Dean, thats true, it is also true that the man never had a strategy to save his life... he knew two words, CUT MORE, he didnt care how, he didnt care where, he didnt care if there was a franchise left when he walked out the door, he just wanted to be able to give Steve Rossi and Dean a laundry list of the things he cut this week.

"Just doing his job"...

That's the same BS logic that US Troops love using...We all have the capability to think for ourselves and to discern right from wrong.

Anonymous said...

"troops love using."
Just when you think the bottom-most commentators here couldn't get even more stupiderest, along comes anonymous 4:23 to drain the logic pool another thimble full.

People please your talking about businessmen and women who are not journalist. They don't care that cutting content will damage the product.
You don't need to cut, be creative and find a way to live with 2&3% profit margins.
Wall Street is in trouble for the same reason MediaNews is, old fashioned GREED.
Singleton has little D*#* syndrome and his business plan is to plunder all he can from is over leveraged properties, file for bankruptcy like should have earlier.

One question what pay cut did Dean give himself?

And Dean Singleton is clearly delusional.

His business model is to breakdown the company and profit from it.

Singleton Quotes

-1995 to the American Journalism Review: "If I had my choice between pleasing one banker or 1,000 journalists, I'd rather please the banker."

-To the SNPA 10/202008

"In today's world, whether your desk is down the hall or around the world, from a computer standpoint, it doesn't matter,"

"If you need to offshore it, offshore it,"

FROM: Jody Lodovic/Dean Singleton
RE: RECENT PRESS

" MediaNews doesn't believe cost cutting is a long term strategy. However, we recognize that there is a structural change in our business, and we must align our cost structure accordingly. "

2000

" We, as an industry, got carried away with investigative reporting," he complained. "We investigated everything that moved, while circulation plummeted because our readers didn't want it. Some people say we owe it to readers to give them what they need. Bullshit."

2004

" we need to dig deeper and do harder-edge reporting."

you want to couch ed as mr clean just doing what he was told, fine by me, but, wrong. I go back to the question posed earlier, cuts take skill, how do you keep the organization strong, he didn't. Growing revenue is critical...not one idea bore fruit that he did...he never tried. He hired people like one mentioned earlier that cut rates with not gain in volume etc etc. I give him an F in his time. I am sure he doesn't care, but, take a long look at his track record, any success in growth, and I don't mean just now...go back a few years. Sorry, this individual remains most unimpressed with him and his lack of talent he surrounded himself with. As far as Ed fighting for anyone but himself, bullshit. Truth does not come from his lips and first hand knowledge gives me facts to base my opinion on.

10:48, the lack of openness and honesty seems to be an organizational hazard with LANG.

There's a saying -- an old and corny one -- about Lambert and others.

"Q. How can you tell they're lying?
"A. Their lips are moving."

Anonymous said...

My favorite on his SD press release is that they will need to maximize current revenue streams and create new ones. Oh PLEEEEEEEEEEASE. Sorry Ed, didn't happen here and isn't going to happen down south under your leadership.

if we all think lang is in such bad shape, why does the DN story on the promotion of hamilton sound so optimistic. He says the papers are doing better and blah blah blah. and things will turn around. just sounds like he has some really grand plan to keep it all alive. it's on life support now.

Anonymous said...

What's Hamilton supposed to say, the truth? Something like, "we anticipate shutting down operations by November 15." What's the over under on how long he'll last before Lean Dean makes another move?

Anonymous said...

pull the san gabriel numbers out of the "created" inland division and let's see how hamilton has done.

people that are a lot closer than me are not impressed with him but think he will be better than moss was. though, that shouldn't be hard to do.

go to ronkayela.com for the real deal.

Anonymous said...

5:32 PM Anonymous: Where in the world are you getting a margin of 28.3% from?

Anonymous said...

look, ron kaye is a journalist and i believe he weeps for the daily news as it was and even as it is and what it may become. i am not a writer, but ron is a pro and is telling the truth. ed moss has drivel coming out of his mouth when he speaks. his hired consultants and friends have sunk the ship with zero revenue ideas that have made a profit. magazines...toast...newspaper next...a joke...retail revenue discounts...drain on rates with no volume increases. watch this bad act repeat in san diego.

Anonymous said...

I guess this means woodland hills won't be headquarters for lang any longer.

Anonymous said...

2:55 what makes u think w.h. won't be the headquarters?

Anonymous said...

do you think hamilton will make that drive? i sure don't. my money is headquarters in the east. and, what do you lose...not much i can think of.

Anonymous said...

So, the invest a few million to remodel a new leased office...then quickly cut staff. Now, those digs are way to large and staff gets cut again and again. Now, with Hamilton in charge, woodland hills won't be used for the old headquarters. Howevr, nice signage from the 101 freeway. Great planning you dolts.
