Dadaism?

I'm stumped.

That's what will make that paper (and it's painfully slow loading website) viable and relevant. This is hard hitting journalism. An advocate for the people. What's next? Denny's cooks were amped on steroids as they cooked Grand Slams? They found their niche. Call Dean, all's well.

Oh my God. A short, bright, funny story in a local newspaper.

Looks precisely like what will make a local paper relevant. In fact, it seems to be better read than the story on a corruption investigation at the Temple City City Hall (hey, look, hard-hitting journalism from the paper, too).

Let's all watch and see how readers of this blog contort themselves to criticize it.

Anon 6:13, nice start, but you can do better. Go back to your troll cave and try again.

Short? Bright? Funny?

Check out the reader comments on the story. Even about half of those people are asking why the hell that story was written.

One observer seems to have the SGV Tribune's ticket: "They buried the lead. This story has a Moe angle."

It's the journalistic equivalent of Bollywood - here's the main story, but also a completely unrelated musical number. Maybe Moe was the writer?

Of course, everyone on here who chooses to poke at the story finds themselves in a bit of an ironic dilemma:

You (like the commenters on the story) all found it interesting enough to read.

In fact, you read it all the way to the end.

Beyond that, you found it interesting enough to seek out a forum in which to share your thoughts on it.

Or is that what you all do all day? Scour the Internet to consume items you don't care about, so you can spend even more of your valuable time bitching about them? Very productive.

Why is someone so defensive about this story?

Anonymous said...

I liked it. Can't find it anywhere else.

It's really a Moe the Chimp story. Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

It's an amusing story, but the writing could have been more fun, more punchy for what it was.

Too true.

This might have been funny in The Onion. Maybe. Here it just shows how 'we' are so willing to squander the few labor resources we have left.

Layoff and furloughs are funny too.

I like the idea that this could be an example of Journalistic DaDa. That's much funnier than the story.

Holy-frigging crap. This is what happens when real reporters are let go and interns and rookies are brought in. Throw in early deadlines in the mix and now you got a sweaty, pimply kid wringing his hands to see what he can write before deadline so his editors (people with no editing experience but a lot of A** kissing experience) don't blow their tops. A true editor would have had this crap thrown out and left a blank space in the page instead of being embarrassed by such amateurish and idiotic writing. These papers can't close soon enough for me.

A lot of people read porn spam-mail too. And they report to other people that they got it. That's just base human mentality. On the web that's "journalism by hits."

It doesn't matter how trite or irrelevant it is, as long as you get the hit, you're a journalist.

Journalism is what you make it.

Let's make it even more trite.

Way to go.

We don't have enough reporters to cover our cities anymore, but we cover crap like this.

Too bad the Octomom doesn't live in our coverage area.

Screw you and your "bad decision making" tag.
If you had one ounce of journalistic integrity yourself you wouldn't editorialize through labels.
All your Web site offers is a forum for the disgruntled and failed "journalists" of the world to spew their foul venom at hard-working real reporters who understand what it takes to keep their newspapers afloat.
If you think reporting on the state of journalism is going to win you any awards Gary, think again. Your site probably has all of 100 hits a day and most of those come through LA Observed.
You are living off the public tit, working at a low-rated, federally funded left-wing and irrelevant radio station.
Picking on LANG and the young people that work there is low, especially when you have to use your girlfriend to feed you memos and unverified gossip.
You are a gutless failure. Good luck finding another job when you burn your bridges with Olney...

Previous post 9:19 is bizzaaarrly trollish. Incomprehensively dark, overwrought, confused and yet speedily stooopid. Kind of like us chimps when tranked and agitated. Don't ... make .. us .. mad.

"St. James": If you think this blog is about attacking journalists, or picking on the young people that work for LANG, you're completely misguided. I'm trying bring attention to their plight.

You're also wrong to think the comments left here are some evidence of a pied-piper revolt. Just because I don't censor them doesn't mean I always agree with them, anymore than the comments that run under an online article speak for the newspaper.

As for the rest of your screed, you have every right to criticize me, I just wish you'd leave the mischaracterizations of others out.

RE: "Picking on LANG and the young people that work there is low,"

You are an idiot. Young people at LANG are running scared. They don't know how to keep a paper afloat. All they know what to do is say yes to ANYTHING a so-called editor tells them. Everyone there is just there for a paycheck til they get cut. Period. Anyone with a different story come forward because all you still there are cowards just waiting for the next paycheck or the next cut. That paper group is irelevant to customers cause they dont buy it and irelevant to the advertiser because they dont buy into their "1 million readers strong" F**K that big A** lie.

LOL at ANON 9:03 who spends his days reading spam porn e-mail and talking about it with his (or her) friends.

And double LOL at ANON 6:43, calling other people "cowards" in an anonymous post on a message board. Talk about cowardly.

I understand the venom towards Singleton for the harm he has done to the industry. But why anyone would choose to criticize the hard-working young journalists who are trying to make the best of a bad situation is beyond comprehension.

Can't handle the heat Gary? Maybe you should get out of the blog business...it seems sort of interesting that you chose to delete that post ..when in your words:

"Just because I don't censor them doesn't mean I always agree with them, anymore than the comments that run under an online article speak for the newspaper."

Calm down, people. Some unidentified reporter wrote a dumb story about pancakes and monkeys that was worth making a little fun of. A three-word post about that shouldn't be a threat to anybody's identity or sense of self-worth or whatever. Nor should it be a reason to question the validity of Gary's blog, which some LANG people kind of enjoy for all the vitriol it inspires. Jesus christ!

Anonymous said...

It's pretty obvious this site fulfills one heck of an important purpose when you see how hard the LANG apologists work to attack both the union and anyone who criticizes them.

St. James, it's obvious you didn't pick up New York or Tennessee, so you're just a goofy voice by yourself.

"IHOP pancake shortage alleged"

COVINA - IHOP, also known as the International House of Pancakes, may have run out of pancakes last night at its restaurant on 702 S. Citrus Ave."

This serves as a cautionary reminder that pitching a "short, bright, funny story" is an entirely different thing than actually writing (and editing) one.

Anonymous said...

Todd is unfair. The pancakes are leaden in texture, hence the flat, leaden and pancake redundant lede is appropriate, officials said, according to the officials.
