Dying in the Deseret

The Deseret News will cut 35 positions by mid-July. The paper's editor blames a steep decline in classified advertising. Circulation at the Latter Day Saints-owned paper has been relatively stable, down just two percent. The Singleton-owned Salt Lake Tribune, on the other hand, saw an 8-percent drop in circulation.

Another cheap shot at Singleton. What a surprise (so much for not posting non-sequiturs, right g-man?). Let's set the record straight. According to ABC, the Trib's circ was down 5% March to March. If you look at individually paid (minus junk circulation), both papers are down 6%.

Yes, it was a terribly cheap to repeat information gleaned directly from the Deseret News article, which says, "In general, circulation is down 16 percent industrywide. Locally, the Salt Lake Tribune's circulation has dropped 8 percent, while Deseret News circulation has dipped 2 percent."

Perhaps the reporter got the numbers wrong, or didn't analyze them in the way that you did. Either way, there was nothing celebratory about noting the circulation drop at the Tribune. I want newspapers to thrive, Singleton papers included.

So you don't try to verify anything? That's what all these months of hand wringing over journalistic standards has been about? Just Pete and Repeat?

And please don't tell us you don't love the opportunity to take a shot Singleton or LANG.

Let me get this straight.

There is not a newspaper company out there who does not deserve a shot. They are all running for the hills hand wringing the cut expenses mantra without giving any thought on how to grow revenue.

The Singleton group leads the parade in that regard.
