Nowhere to run

Ben Demers just left the San Bernardino Sun for a job at the Glendale News-Press, one of the Los Angeles Times' community newspapers. Now comes this headline from today's LA Observed:"Layoffs at Times Community Newspapers." Kevin Roderick says he's heard at least 10 staffers got laid off; I don't know out of how many.

Maybe that's why they hired Ben. Anyone with MediaNews experience should be able to do the work of 10 people, with time to spare.

...AND don't forget....for the salary of a part-timer!

What's this all about then?

Quote of the Day:

Newsroom cost cuts have gone far enough - perhaps too far. There probably is a limit to how much profit a strong newspaper can take out each year.

That is an excellent quote

From someone who has worked for both the Glendale News-Press and LANG, I can tell you that I was asked to do much more work at the GNP. If LANG people do the work of 10, GNP do the work of 20. I had to write 11 stories a week, every week, at the GNP...

Speaking of bitter ex-LANG managers and ex-GNP employees, anyone know how Jeff Keating is faring over at Western University?

Keating at Western? If he maintains his pattern, he's proving the Peter Principle right yet again, until those above belatedly realize those below haven't really been to blame. All hat and no cattle, as they say. But at least now the sycophantic ways with developers and elected officials won't cost communities stories they need.

Trib/LAT/TCN and LANG did a good deed for journalism, albeit accidentally and unintentionally.
